Love & Sex

28 Topic: movies/books

Film #5 was Love & Sex with Famke Janssen and Jon Favreau. It’s a typical romantic comedy, some of the dialogs are pretty good.

What I took away from the movie: They both seems to be the same height but she has really long legs while he has a very long torso. It’s funny to see them walking side by side.

I guess I shouldn’t give up my job to become a film critic. :-)

Two days ago I hurt my foot and now I’m limping. The worst part is that I remember hurting my foot but I don’t remember how it happened. It went something like this, I opened the fridge door and it hit my foot or I dropped a soda can on my foot. It hurt a little and I just put it down as another clumsy moment in the life of Daniela. Later that night, I noticed that it really hurt when I walked. But by then, I couldn’t remember how I had hurt my foot anymore. Pretty sad…

The bad thing is that when people notice I’m limping and I tell them I hurt my foot, they always ask me how. I think I can hear them “tsc, tscing” when I tell them I can’t remember.

Heidi Sews

26 Topic: movies/books

Heidi is sewing right now, even as we speak. Yep, you heard that right. Heidi now owns a sewing machine. What’s next? She’ll join a quilt-making club? It appears that from now on, I’ll have to solve riddles before getting to talk to Heidi. Yep, it seems like she hired Chad for the job as her personal sphinx.

By the way, we now know for sure that Tina won’t be renting An Affair of Love, don’t we, Tina? ;-)

I just finished watching movie #4: Sweet Revenge. I wasn’t impressed especially because the plot sounded very familiar: Henry Bell, a fired businessman (Sam Neill), and depressed aristocrat Karen (Helena Bonham Carter) stop each other from jumping off of a bridge. They agree to get revenge on those who have wronged them; she takes a job as secretary for the man who replaced Henry, and he schemes to hurt the romantic rival who stole Karen’s man.

Woman on Top

25 Topic: movies/books

woman on top It was supposed to rain all day so I decided to rent lots & lots of movies (5 movies, to be more precise). I watched three of them today and that was probably more than enough for one day!

The first movie was The Five Senses. It was ok, not too great, but it had its interesting moments. Some of the ways that the director worked the five senses into the movie were nice and subtle but others were a little too obvious, like the eye doctor who’s going deaf.

I then watched An Affair of Love (Une Liaison d’Amour) and was very pleasantly surprised. I had read some reviews which lead me to believe that the movie was mostly about sex but that wasn’t at all true. Apparently, the original title was “Une Liaison Pornographique” and the director had chosen that title to make a funny commentary on the fact that there was nothing pornographic about the movie. I highly recommend watching this movie.

Finally, I made myself sit through Woman on Top. The movie was so bad that I read somewhere that Brazilian critics were completely embarrassed after its screening at the Cannes Festival. Since I am not a movie critic, I won’t review this movie for its cinematographic aspects. But as a Brazilian, here is my list of why this movie sucked:

  1. I was happy to see that Penelope Cruz was in the movie, she’s very beautiful as well as a good actress. But she had a Spanish accent when she’s supposed to be playing a Brazilian! She couldn’t even pronounce some Portuguese words!
  2. All Brazilians in this movie spoke English, even the fishermen!
  3. Everyone in Brazil seemed to be dressed like Carmen Miranda!
  4. Isabella’s husband is played by a cheesy Brazilian soap opera actor.
  5. The drag queen (who was the best character in the movie, as cliché as it was) didn’t seem to have a job and was able to afford an apartment in San Francisco. Hah!
  6. Finally, the director, who’s obviously not Brazilian, tried to imitate “Like Water for Chocolate” and failed miserably.
