The Real Martha

29 Topic: crafts

caterpillarHeidi will have to forgive me but I think Jenny is the next Martha. Have you seen the purple caterpillar cake and the puppet show she made for Hannah? They’re awesome!

On the other hand, Heidi did make some nice paper flowers… :-)

Origami and How Men Can’t Multi-task

13 Topic: crafts

origami This past Saturday, we decided to make an exception to our crafts parties and allow men to join us.

Now I know why they had been banned in the first place! They can’t multi-task so they are no fun!

While Heidi, Su, and I talked the whole time WHILE creating magnificent origami shapes, Nathan hardly noticed we were there. He didn’t participate and he had nothing to say. He basically sat in a corner and concentrated on the task at hand.

Lucas was basically the same but he gave up after his first origami and said he would socialize with us instead. So anyway, this was solid concrete proof that men cannot multi-task!

Paper Flowers

14 Topic: crafts

paper flowers Last Friday, Su, Heidi and I got together to make paper flowers. We like making crafts crap.

It was Heidi’s turn to pick a project and she saw this paper flower making kit on Martha. It was fun but also very difficult. The high amount of white sangria I consumed probably didn’t help. Don’t worry, pictures were taken and the process was well documented for those who couldn’t fly out here to join us.

Making Magnets

18 Topic: crafts

I saw these magnet kits at the online Met store and they seemed like a lot of fun so I decided to buy three of them.

Jo-Ann, Kitchen,

Yesterday, Heidi, Su and I got together for a magnet-making party. I know what you’re thinking, could we get any geekier? It actually turned out to be a lot of fun and I have pictures to prove it.

magnet partyIt’s interesting to note that Su (sitting on the couch) is hard at work while Heidi “works” on spreading some cheese on a cracker and finishes up her second bottle of cider.I’m too busy taking pictures which might explain why I only made 9 magnets while Su and Heidi made 16 or 17 each:
magnetsI think they look pretty good considering none of us had any magnet making experience. The process of making the magnets was also pretty funny and here are some moments worth mentioning:

  • My kit only came with 21 marbles. Su had 23 and Heidi had 24. They thought I had used up some of mine practicing for the big night but that is not true. Heidi gave me an extra marble. She can be nice that way.
  • We started out by using photographs from magazines. Su really didn’t like the cutting part but at the end she was pretty proficient at cutting the right shapes.
  • Su started painting some of her magnets. She seemed to be pretty comfortable with painting vs. cutting and turned into this magnet making machine.
  • I decided to try painting too and made a ladybug and a bee (which still need eyes). Su liked them and decided to copy the idea. I didn’t mind it until she asked: “Daniela, can I see your bee? I need to copy it”. In the end, she came up with her own versions of the bugs.
  • Heidi made a magnet using the Sharks logo for her friend Becky. The logo was too small and I thought she was making a magnet using leftover scraps of paper. It actually looks ok if you look very closely.
  • I had a couple of unsuccessful attempts at making painted magnets and I decided to wash the paint off so I really did make 12 magnets. It’s just that only 9 survived. Considering that I kept on dropping my freshly painted magnets on the carpet, that’s a pretty good number.
  • Finally, as we were talking on the phone to Tina (she was teleconferencing into our party from Rochester), we noticed that one of Su’s magnets looked like the Japanese flag. Su denies it but we thought it was a pretty remarkable fact considering that Nathan is in Japan. ;-)
