Happy Halloween

31 Topic: life

Halloween is by far my favorite holiday. I think it’s a Scorpio thing, even my horoscope said that Halloween is my favorite of all holidays.

Growing up, Halloween wasn’t very popular in Brasil but I still remember going to several Halloween parties. There was this girl in my class who was very rich and an only child and her parents used to throw some outrageous parties. They usually hired professional designers to decorate their house and one year, the designer created a graveyard with crosses for all of her close friends. It was very strange to see your name on a cross. I took mine home but I’m not sure what happened to it.

Haircut and Coffee

30 Topic: out and about

printers incI got my hair cut. You might be wondering why that would be newsworthy. Well, for a couple of reasons. One, I usually cut my own hair and hadn’t been to a hairdresser in 10 years. Two, this is probably the shortest my hair has ever been.

I had to kill some time before my hair appointment so I headed over to a café nearby. As soon as I sit down, this guy sits next to me and doesn’t shut his mouth for the next 20 minutes.

Thanks, Jenny and Aynne for the b-day wishes. Happy B-day to Aynne as well.

House Hunting

28 Topic: food

coppolaI met up with Su and Nathan yesterday to look at a 5 bedroom house in Palo Alto. The house looks great from the outside but it was really old inside and it was already furnished. The owners don’t want to remove the furniture so they’re having a hard time renting it. Their furniture is horrible!

We ended up at Cafe Borrone in Menlo Park, one of my favorite places since Su first took me there when I moved down here. There’s a great bookstore next door that stays open until midnight or something. We got a Portuguese phrasebook so Nathan and Su can start practicing for our trip to Brazil at the end of the year.

Brazilian Portuguese

Marcia Monje de Castro. Lonely Planet Publications 2003, Paperback, 256 pages, $7.99

Birthday
Friday was great! Su and Nathan picked me up and we met Heidi and Chad at the Coppola Cafe. The place is very cool and the food was awesome. I also got some great gifts! After dinner, Su, Nathan, and I went to Los Gatos and then to San Jose but we couldn’t find any places that we liked. We ended up back here in Mountain View at our usual pub. Oh, we then had to stop by Happy Donuts since Nathan was hungry.

Last Blog as a 29 Year Old…

25 Topic: shopping

And I don’t have anything interesting to say.

hillsdaleI went shopping in San Mateo. I figured I should buy myself some b-day gifts. I got a few clothes and a new pair of shoes. Most of the clothes are wintery so I’ll have to wait to wear them.

I’m thinking of getting my hair cut tomorrow but I’m worried that might just be some sort of crazy reaction to turning 30. See, the thing is that I haven’t had my hair professionally cut in a decade. Yep, that’s right. My hair is such a mess that I can cut it myself and make all kinds of mistakes and it doesn’t show. We’ll see if I’m still fond of this idea in the morning.

On other news, I was planning on having a nice b-day working at home but now I have a meeting at 10:00 am and one at 1:00 pm so I’ll have to spend part of the day at the office.

B-day Gift

24 Topic: life, shopping

I got my first b-day gift today! It was from someone in my group and it’s this really nice journal with a silk cover. Very cool!

Happy early b-day to squibnocket too! Her b-day is on Saturday, Oct. 27th. Another insane (she said it, not me) Scorpio in our group of bloggers. :-)

Old Age and Wrinkly Face

23 Topic: shopping

When I turned 25, I went out and got all these anti-aging anti-wrinkle anti-sagging anti-nature creme for my face.

Now that the big 3-0 is approaching, I suddenly feel the urge to do the same all over again. The main difference is that this time I’ll probably feel compelled to use them!

Gift List

23 Topic: shopping

gifts Tina had asked me to post a list of things I would like for my b-day. The sad part is, I can’t think of anything! I mean, there are many things I want but they are all pretty expensive and not appropriate gifts.

For example, I have used up all of my dental insurance money but I still need to get a root canal done. I’d love to have someone else pay for that but the likelihood of that happening is very slim, unless I wait until I go home at the end of the year and spend the next two months on pain killers.

Still on the dental arena, I need a mouth guard because I grind my teeth at night. That’s not covered by my insurance so add another $400 to my dental expenses this year. Oh, did I mention that I would also like to get braces (removable kind, of course) since my teeth started moving now that I’m getting older?

What else? I really wanted a 21" monitor for home. Again, not a very likely gift. Luckily, Su scored one for me through her job so I will get one after all. And it will only cost 80 bucks. (Yes, it’s used).

A DVD player would be nice. I also need a new VCR. Those things aren’t too expensive so I could probably buy them myself. The problem is that then I would have to somehow connect them to my current setup which Chad so carefully put together. Twice! And I can’t risk spoiling my Tivo setup. Yes, I’m addicted!

Moving on… Did I mention that I would love to have my own house? Again, not a very helpful item to add to my wish list.

So, Tuna, as you can see, I can’t think of anything to add to this gift wish list. I hope you have an easier time writing your list (and that you do it soon! Hint, hint).

Brasiiiiiiiiiillllllllll

19 Topic: travel

sampaI bought my ticket for my trip to Brasil at the end of the year. It was $570! That is an unbelievable deal. I leave on Dec. 19th and come back on Jan. 14th. That means I get back to SF Jan 15th so I don’t go back to work until Jan. 16th. I don’t think I have that much vacation so I may have to take a couple of days of unpaid vacation. That sucks but then again, I’m pretty excited that I get to spend such a long time with my family. And Su and Nathan are coming to Brasil too. Tuna and Chuck were thinking of coming as well but it doesn’t look like they’ll be able to make it.

On a happier note, Tuna is coming to visit!!!! I’m throwing a small party on Nov. 2nd so it’ll probably be a joint b-day thing. Mine is Oct 26th and Tuna’s is Nov. 16th which means that we are both Scorpios. That could explain why we get along so well. :-)
