Rent

28 Topic: complaining, shopping

Things are changing around here although it looks like some people (meaning landlords) are still unaware of that fact:

$1600 - 2 Bedroom Apartment Mountain View
Places like these are still rare and sound suspiciously cheap (I know, I know, people who don’t live in this area are thinking: “What? That’s higher than my mortgage”. Yep, it probably is and yep, we probably are stupid to be living in this area to begin with).

$1850 - 2/1 Apt - Centrally Located (Move-in Bonus)
Ads like these are becoming more and more common. Last year, the word “bonus” meant that you had to pay the landlord a little something extra to even be considered for a place.

$2000 - Mt. View -2bdrm, 1.5 ba avail now. Private addition
This is probably average for the area although last year I saw a “private addition” where they just built something over a garage, divided up 700 sq. ft. into a living room and two “closets” and called it a 2 BR. Oh, and they were asking $2,500 for it.

$2400 - Beautiful 2bed/1bath house 1 block from Castro Str
Yeah, but is it really *that* beautiful? As in, Am-I-willing-to-pay-$400-more-a-month beautiful?

$2695 - Beautiful Upstairs 2×2 Condo @ The Lakes of Mountain View
I’m assuming that part of the rent goes to pay for the hired ducks. Ducks are getting pretty expensive. Last I heard, ducks were getting paid $15/hr just to hang out in our ponds at work.
By the way, since when are there Lakes in Mountain View?

Dr. Flintstone

27 Topic: complaining, life

dentist chair I hadn’t been to the dentist in two years (since I moved to California). I know, I know, shame on me!
I finally decided it was time to go but no one here had a good dentist to recommend. So I used Metlife’s site and picked one from a list. He was Japanese. I figured he’d be good. I know, I know, cultural stereotypes are bad. His office was also in a nice town so that seemed like a bonus.

I get there and his office looks like a temporary house. You know, like the ones they build in construction sites and they tear down after they are done with the "actual" construction. Similar to RIT apartments. I go into his office and his equipment is from the Flintstone’s era. The little console thingy was blue and had all these round edges. It looked like a vacuum cleaner from the 50s. He cleaned my teeth and told me I had a cavity. I told them I would call later to make an appointment. Today I called another dentist.

The Pump Incident Reactions

19 Topic: musings

I’m not sure what’s worse, the fact that Joel thinks I’m crazy or the fact that when I tell people here about my bottles bubbling over, they have their own bubbly bottle stories to tell. Why didn’t this happen in Rochester? It was pretty hot there as well but I never heard of this phenomenon until now!

The Pump Incident

19 Topic: musings

I’ve been complaining for a while that my house is way too hot and now I finally have proof. Not only did the candle that Su gave me melt, I also started noticing some heat induced spillage around the house.

It all started in the bathroom. My shampoo bottle has a pump dispenser and it started leaking. I thought the bottle was defective and had a hole in the bottom so I put it down sideways. The next day, there were bubbles coming out of the pump. I didn’t think anything of it. Two days later, I noticed a pool of soap around my soap bottle in the kitchen. That’s when it hit me! The heat was either causing the bottles to expand, and then shrink, causing the liquids to spew out or it was somehow doing the same thing to the liquid itself. Either way, I took it as a good sign that I need to move. Soon!

Paper Flowers

14 Topic: crafts

paper flowers Last Friday, Su, Heidi and I got together to make paper flowers. We like making crafts crap.

It was Heidi’s turn to pick a project and she saw this paper flower making kit on Martha. It was fun but also very difficult. The high amount of white sangria I consumed probably didn’t help. Don’t worry, pictures were taken and the process was well documented for those who couldn’t fly out here to join us.

I got some great CDs the other day: Hooverphonic, REM, Goldfrapp, Mazzy Star, Cowboy Junkies, Radiohead, and Morcheeba.

So Tonight That I Might See

Capitol 1993, Audio CD, $16.98

Big Calm

Rhino / Wea 1998, Audio CD, $13.98

Studio

Bmg Int’l 1998, Audio CD, $19.99

It’s funny but I hardly bought any CDs in the past year. Blame it on MP3s!
So some of these CDs were actually released a long time ago, I just hadn’t thought of buying them.

Colorful Dress Inlaid with Pearls

05 Topic: musings

I’ve said it before and I will say it again: the Chinese have the best show titles!
I never got to watch Vague Girl Disturbing World but now I’m intrigued by a show called Colorful Dress Inlaid with Pearls.

On another note, I didn’t like kettle korn. Sorry Tuna!

Kettle Korn & Santiago de Compostela

03 Topic: food, travel

kettle korn I talked to Tuna on Friday and she told me that kettle korn is mainly available at festivals. I’m not a big festival person. A few hours later I talked to Heidi and they were going to the Foster City Fair. So I seized the opportunity and now I’ll be able to try kettle korn! Maybe I’ll have I tomorrow as I’m watching usability tests.

Tuna also said that she and Chuck might come to Brazil at the end of the year when I go to visit my family. That would be awesome. I talked to my mom and she is really excited too.

My dad called me from Spain yesterday. He’s doing this crazy pilgrimage thing to Santiago de Compostela. He has covered about 50 miles so far and is already completely exhausted. He still has about 100 miles to go and only 6 days left. I hope he has a good week and I can’t wait until he is home.
