Better than Starbucks

13 Topic: food, shopping

While our coffee machine was out for repairs, we rediscovered our manual milk frother. I first saw one of these at my mom’s house last time we were in Brazil. We immediately had to go out and buy one to bring back with us.

It makes the thickest, creamiest foam I’ve ever tasted. It’s easy to use and easy to clean. The model we have is from Frabosk.

Introducing Snap Shots from Snap.com

12 Topic: blogging

I just installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more.

Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you “look ahead,” before deciding if you want to follow a link or not.

Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out.

The Search for the Perfect Crumb Cake

07 Topic: food, shopping

cakeMy husband is a crumb cake fanatic so we have been on a quest to find his ideal cake. I think we found it!

You can order it from Hahn’s Old Fashioned Coffee Cake. He even tried the raspberry one (which sounded a bit weird to a purist like himself) but really liked it.

Bye Bye, Marie Claire

06 Topic: complaining, movies/books

Marie Claire (1-year)

Hearst Magazines, Magazine, $42.00

This used to be my favorite fashion magazine. That’s right, it *used* to be.

It’s really changed a lot when the new editor took over (Joanna Coles). The design is awful, some sections are almost ineligible. It also feels like they’re trying too hard to be like Vogue or Bazaar. If I wanted to read one of those magazines, I’d buy them.

Interestingly, I may not the only one who feels this way. Sales have been consistently low since Ms. Coles took over. In other industries, most executives would be “dealt with” fairly quickly if they were impacting the bottom line. Why does poor performance seem to be more tolerated in publishing?

For now, all I can say is that my subscription ran out and for the first time in many years, I won’t be renewing it. I am now subscribing to the UK version.

Marie Claire - Uk Edition

Ipc Magazines Ltd, Magazine, $106.00

Stormy Weather

05 Topic: complaining

stormWe were hit by a bad storm here in California that started early Friday morning.

By 10:00 am, our power went out.

By 6:00 pm, power was back in our neighborhood, except for our street. We kept calling PG&E to get updates in vain.

Woke up this morning, still no power. It finally came back around 2:00 pm. All of our food was spoiled by then. Joy.

I shouldn’t complain though. There were significant damages in some other areas so we were actually pretty lucky.
